Workshops
@ Botanic Providence
May 2nd, 2024 6-8
Join Botanic Providence and Reed McLaren of The Sustainable Garment for the first Well Worn Workshop where we will be guided on how to lovingly maintain the articles of our wardrobe.
Participants are encouraged to bring a beloved article from their wardrobe that they would like to explore how to best care for, whether it be that favorite cozy sweater, best pair of yoga pants, hardworking leather handbag or whatever else most resonates.
Reed will offer inspiration from her own collection of carefully groomed and visibly mended items and share the techniques and tools used in her craft, including her personal stash of cashmere and vintage laces and notions, for all to experiment and play with!
Workshop fee is $45. Space is limited. Refreshments and nibbles will be provided.

@ Mad Dog Studios
April 13, 2023 6-8:30
In a Meet and Greet with the artists of Mad Dog Studios, Reed shared her unique practice in the art of garment grooming and modern mending, highlighting the tools and methods that she uses to maintain her collection of exquisite natural material garments. Reflecting upon our growing cultural concern towards fast fashion, the participants explored how important it is to rekindle a connection to the clothes we own.
Building on these themes in a hands-on demonstration and workshop, Reed will show us how to fall in love with and make our garments last with the help of various methods of care and repair, including building our own DIY sweater comb and using needle felting to salvage our favorite woolens. Practice pieces will be provided and participants are encouraged to bring along their own item that they are comfortable attempting this method of repair (woolens and cashmere work best).
Open to the public. Register here:

We all have those special items in our closet that we love, but do we always treat them like we do? That beautiful silk blouse with the “dry clean only” tag that ends up going unworn, a once favorite but now ratty looking sweater destined for the donate pile, those perfect leggings that didn’t hold up so perfectly after the wash and need to be replaced - again.
Loving the clothes we own and helping make them last is a big part of sustainable fashion. We’ve got the first part down, so let’s finally get a handle on the rest! Bring an item or two from your closet that you want to learn how to care for, or just come and learn how to cherish those future finds.
We’ll start off with a roundtable show-and-tell with historic garments from Reed’s personal collection to explore our unique clothing care experiences and examine how the value placed on our clothes and their care has declined over time. Then we’ll get our hands on the different care tools and learn how to:
Brush outwear to go way beyond the sticky roll
Use a comb to remove pills and rejuvenate our sweaters
Repair holes in knits with the magic of needle felting
Wash even those “dry clean only” delicate items like silk and cashmere
Refresh to avoid over-washing
Properly store items to prevent moth damage
Each participant will walk away with your own DIY sweater comb!
