Drying and Airing Out
Airing out was once widely practiced to freshen garments when washing happened far less often.
Refreshing clothing in-between wears helps to avoid the damaging effects of over-washing and drying, but many of us have fallen into a curious habit. We wear something once and then throw it in the wash, even if it isn’t actually dirty.
Opting to freshen in lieu of washing helps to extend the life of our clothing. Natural materials especially can benefit simply by being allowed to air out overnight before putting back in the drawer, or outside in the fresh air for an even greater effect. In addition, the use of a steamer or steam from the shower allows the sanitizing effect of steam to pass through the fiber to deodorize and help remove wrinkles.
When it does come time to wash, we often follow up with the clothes dryer - the epitome of modern day convenience. While its convenience cannot be disputed, the dryer, especially if too high a heat is used, can be a harsh environment and its overuse is one of the major contributors to the premature retirement of our clothing. As an alternative, using a drying rack, at least for our better pieces, can help retain the shape and condition of these garments for many years to come.
