Storage and Moth Prevention
Proper storage allows us to maintain the shape of our clothing while protecting it from dust, discoloration and the damage of moths and other pests.
Folding sweaters and putting them in drawers prevents them from stretching out and becoming distorted. For our garments that should be hung, such as dresses and jackets, using higher quality hangers that have a gentle shape in the shoulders helps to keep the structure in tact. For special pieces, a dust cover placed over the garment helps to ward off dust and discoloration from light.
When it comes to longer term storage, washing our garments before storing is critical; moth larvae are more attracted to debris from food stains and oils from our bodies than from the fiber itself. Cotton storage garment bags, such as those offered by The Laundress, are ideal as the larvae are not attracted to cotton, and are a better choice than plastic which can suffocate the fiber and breed mold and mildew.
Cedar is useful as a natural moth repellent, but avoid placing the garment directly against cedar, such as in a chest, as the oils from cedar can cause acid burn. Acid free tissue can help protect the garments, whether in long term storage or in the drawer in between wears.
